History of using marble

As the center of timeless design, marble was a central part of the classical architecture of ancient Greece and Rome. Flooring, paving, wall covering, archietectural decorative elements, sculpture, column and fountain are mostly classical application. Untill today, marble is still a prestige building element for morden construction.

Being formed from limestone, marble is superheated to form its unique crystalline structure. Although marble tiles are porous and easy to get stain, it still remains one of the most popular reliable and affordable building material.

First of all, you need to make sure the subfloor is completely flat without divots, defects of bumps. Drawing a reference line on the surface of underlayment will highly help to achieve a satisfying effect. Find the center of two opposing walls and use a line chalk to draw a path. Spreading enough motar will cover the bottom of a single marble tile easily. Put in the tile and gently press it into place. And use a rubber mallet to lightly tap the surface of marble tiles. Not to tap too hard,as marble is a relatively soft stone, it may break the marble tile. A small wet saw machine to handle basic straight cuts. Some people will prefer to field measure the flooring and purchase marble tiles which are already cut by the supplier.It will avoid unneccessary damaging and cracking by un-proper cutting. Marble tiles are porous and manh material will be penestrated and cause permanent stains. That is why sealing is the last but equally important step to finish the installation of marble tile for flooring.

What is marble slabs

Marble slab can be definited as the semi-finished marble products for futher fabrication into various forms of finished cut to size marble product, such as tile, threhold, window sill, countertop, cornice etc. It is usually rough edges (uncut), and the average size is 220 to 300cm in length and 120 to 180cm in height. Selecting marble slab from the consideration of size is initial and vital step to get a high output capacity of marble tiles.

The price of marble tile doesn't have to come together the quality. Due to the natural physical properties, however, most marble must require meshed backing to make sure the marble slab will not break.

 

How to select quality marble tiles

There is not national industry standard to judge the quality of marble tiles. Marble Institute of America publish many educational articles on how to know and buy marble tiles in proper manner and acceptable budget. And there are also some hints you can watch out for lower quality marble tile.

Looking at the bottom of marble tile. If it appears to be covered in a mesh or net, the marble is expected to be more fragile than others. THe mesh is fiberglass glued with epoxy resin, and is used reinforce the marble against cracking and breaking. It is normal in the marble industry and doesn't say a poor quality.

Examine the surface of marble tile. Most marble will require epoxy resin filling to cover any pit hole or fissures of marble surface and increase the polishing degree. However some marble like Thassos White from Greece and Crystal White from China and Vietnam don't require that process. The quality of marble itself will be otherwise bad if doing so.

Smal fissures on the surface of marble are common and will not effect the quality or application in project. Some marble like Crema Marfil from Spain are very prone to fissures and may be likely to crack If the fissures are deep enough. Please examine the edge of the marble tile to see if the fissure is deep thoroughly to the bottom.




What is the thickness of marble tile

The common thickness of marble tile are 3/8" (10mm), 1/2" (12mm), 5/8" (15mm), 3/4" (20mm) and 1 1/4" (30mm).

12" x 12" x 3/8" (305 x 305 x 10mm) format marble tiles are calibrated and bevel and most applied in the kitchen and bathroom. Large format like 36" x 36" (90 x 90cm) is mostly used in public area like hotel lobby, office building foyer.

1 1/4" (3cm) marble is mostly for stair step with bullnose or square edge finish.



Pro and cons between natural stone marble and artifical marble stone

Artifical marble is a man-made marble stone composite of white marble calcium powder, bonding resin, color agent, decorative glass and shell. Comparing with natural stone marble, it enjoys the benefit of uniform color consistence and texure, unlimited color and texture creation and zero fissue and crack problem. From other coin side, it looks dull and can be only used for wall covering and tub/shower surround. Promoted by some architects and designers from Hong Kong and Italy, artifical marble gains some market share in commercial and hospitality building material.

Porcelain tile is ligher in weight than marble tiles and require less regular maintenance. From the big picture, marble tile cost more than porcelain tiles.
